“Kids Social Media Ban Gets DeSantis Veto, Now A New Ban Revived in HB 3”

Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed HB 1, the number one priority of Florida House Speaker Paul Renner. In his veto message, the Governor indicated a compromise was worked out with the House and Senate to alleviate his concerns over the bill’s constitutionality and parental rights protection.

In the vetoed HB 1, children under 16 were banned from obtaining social media accounts.

Monday, Senate Sponsor Erin Grall offered the Florida Senate amended language on House Bill 3, containing revised language to the vetoed HB 1, which is agreeable to the Governor.

Children under 14 are not allowed to have social media accounts in the new language. Children between 14 and 15 must obtain parental consent to access a social media platform.

The Senate adopted and passed HB 3, and the Florida House and Governor DeSantis will concur.
