Governor DeSantis and conservative lawmakers are fed up with "Fake News" and "opinion" journalism cloaked as news.
I share their viewpoint.
But in their understandable frustration, proposed legislation SB 1220 and HB 991 is a bridge too far with unintended consequences. Plus, it's unconstitutional.
In the three years or more before the Supreme Court could review the case, frivolous lawsuits against conservative/Christian radio talk show hosts and outlets will destroy them.
It's a trial lawyer's dream bill. Frivolous defamation suits against me and Salem Radio would run wild.
If passed, the late Rush Limbaugh, uncontested best ever in talk radio, would have had to abandon his EIB headquarters in South Florida.
Call or email your Florida State Senator and Florida House member. Ask them NOT to support SB 1220 and HB 991.
Bill Bunkley is a 17-year veteran Salem Media talk show host based in Tampa. The Bill Bunkley Show airs weekdays across central Florida from 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Convention Churches), among other churches and entities. He has served as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention for the last 27 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
