Easter has passed and the mass migration has begun of “snowbirds” heading north out of Florida.

The term “snowbird” was first coined back in 1923. If one is a northern retiree who heads south for a couple of months to avoid Old Man Winter, they are a snowbird. 

Now to be honest, being classified as a snowbird can bear a negative persona. The mass gathering of our local snowbirds usually stereotypes them as slow drivers, bottlenecking the interstates, and extending wait times in local restaurants.

To avoid insulting a snowbird, maybe addressing them as a “winter visitor” would be more appropriate.

Either way, I embrace our winter visitors.

Remember their seasonal contribution to our state sales and vacation taxes keeps all of us Floridians from paying a state income tax.

I wish them safe travel back home.
