“Hillsborough Veterans Court is a Trail Blazer”

Today the Florida Senate Military, Veterans Affairs, and Space Committee is hearing SB 1226 Military Veterans and Service Members Court Programs. HB 937 is its identical companion in the House.

This issue is special because of prior tail blazing by Hillsborough’s 13th Judicial Court.

Under the supervision of a former military lawyer and current Judge Michael J. Scionti, Hillsborough has operated their Veterans Treatment Court, serving our veterans with special consideration and understanding when a vet breaks the law and winds up in the court system. I commend the work Judge Scionti has accomplished on behalf of veterans.

Currently, the program is optional across Florida, but this bill would make Veteran’s Court mandatory.

I support the bill, and it should be mandatory statewide.
