“Is State-Sanctioned Gambling About to Expand in Florida”
Each year the Florida Legislature is watched closely on the issue of gambling expansion.
Up to last week, the legislature had been silent on any gambling legislation. That changed when the Senate Regulated Industries announced it is considering two bills: one is creating a Gaming Control Commission, the second provides for decoupling of jai-alai, harness racing, and former dog racing facilities from conducting live events to keep their card rooms open.
These proposals come because of unsuccessful negotiations with the Seminole Tribe of Florida on a new gaming compact; the previous one has expired.
Be forewarned; if both bills become law, the result would lead to an eventual expansion of gambling in Florida.
And that is why I will be opposing both gambling expansion bills.
