"An Iconic Cathedral”
Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About
Paris’s 800 year old Cathedral of Notre Dame was almost destroyed by fire. Her massive stone walls still stand but her wooden roof and rafters quickly turned into ash and smoke.
It took 200 years to build the Cathedral from 1163 to 1345.
She went into disrepair and was almost torn down. Napoleon saved the Cathedral and was crowned emperor there in 1804. During World War II the stained glass windows were removed fearing the Nazi’s were planning to destroy them.
Priceless paintings, statutes and artifacts adorn the Cathedral including a crown of thorns, a relic claimed to be the one placed on Jesus’ head. Her organ and bell tower are famous worldwide. Fortunately, many items had been removed for the current renovation work.
And fundraising is already underway to rebuild this iconic landmark.
