Pre-tariff panic buying has set in with companies and individuals buying imported goods before new shipments arrive and prices shoot up.
The result is an artificial trade deficit of $140.5 billion in March with countries that will soon drop like a rock. When existing inventories dry up, we’ll see a dramatic reverse in spending.
Individual consumers are stocking up on staples at big box stores. If you need children’s Christmas toys, future shortages dictate that now might be the time to complete your shopping.
Some are pushing up car purchases even though they don’t need a new ride. Businessweek economists warn that some consumers will get overextended with high car payments that will tie them up for years.
Right now, cash is king. Avoid opening new credit accounts and prepare to weather the financial storm until the tariffs' benefits kick in.
