Understanding personal finance is sorely lacking when students graduate high school. And the Florida legislature’s HB 7071didn’t go far enough to insure Florida kids have financial literacy.

The new law does give students an opportunity to learn how to balance a checkbook, use savings and investments to plan for retirement, learn about compounding interest in savings accounts, loans and credit card debt, predatory lending and payday loans, preventing identity theft and renting vs buying a home.

But it only requires it to be an elective, not a required course.

We did away with home economics class a long time ago. But teaching personal finance that was a part of home economics classes should still be taught to every student.

Next session the legislature should make financial literacy a required course.
