“What Should be the Priority Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention”

Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About

Southern Baptists are meeting in Nashville.

A significant debate has arisen about the role, mission, and transparency of the SBC.

Unfortunately, topics of sexual abuse prevention and reporting, Critical Race Theory, political candidates, public engagement of Biblical worldview issues in the government square, and others are the headliners this week, not winning souls.

Now these are essential issues the Messengers must confront from a Biblical worldview, but not as their top priority.

Convention members must reprioritize their focus and discussions back to the historical mandate: leading the way in sending out home and foreign missionaries, facilitating start-up churches, and equipping for one on one discipleship.

And that’s what the Convention “buzz” should be about this week.

Bill Bunkley is a 15-year veteran Salem Radio talk show host based in west-central Florida, airing weekdays 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Churches throughout Florida), among other churches and entities. He has served as legislative consultant to the Convention for the last 24 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
