US Surgeon General: Warning Labels on Social Media Platforms

Bill Bunkley’s “This Is Something to Think About Commentary”

Air Date Tuesday, June 18, 2024

Health warning labels have appeared on tobacco products for years. Unfortunately, many have not heeded those warnings and, in some cases, have paid a very high price by losing their life.

Now, the U.S. Surgeon General is calling on tobacco-type warnings to be affixed to social media platforms.

General Vivek Murthy requested Congress to move legislation to require the warning labels. Murthy said, “It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents.”

The warnings would remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proven safe.

Tobacco warnings increase awareness and can change behaviors. The same may work on social media.

That said, Congress should move quickly to implement social media warnings.
