At sunrise on Thursday morning, the city of Surfside, Florida, got its first glimpse of an unspeakable catastrophe from the early morning hours.
In a sight harkening back to the morning of 911, sections of a high-rise condo on the shores of the Atlantic came tumbling down, almost in slow motion. It was as if a skilled demolition crew had timed the destructive event perfectly.
It will be days until recovery crews can sift through the 51 condo units that came pancaking down. Officials fear the worst in terms of how many people perished in the collapse.
What caused the collapse is a mystery at this point, but the FBI will be unusually involved in the collapse investigation.
With many high-rise condos in Florida, many are eager to learn what happened to that condo in Surfside.
