Human Trafficking: A Global Scourge

Bill Bunkley’s “This Is Something to Think About Commentary”

Air Date Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Modern-day slavery is still a global scourge.

We may think only of the sex trade when we hear the words human trafficking. Still, enslaved people around the globe are forced to work long hours in open fields under the hot, blazing sun, in unsafe factories, in the back of restaurants, and as private house servants.

Recent statistics estimate that 27 million are exploited worldwide.

In 1860, just before the Civil War, there were 4 million enslaved people in America. By some estimates, 1 million people are human trafficked in the U.S. today.

The top 10 cities for human trafficking, as rated by calls to the national hotline in order, are Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Columbus, Dallas, and San Diego.

Modern slave masters prey on marginalized and vulnerable people

All people deserve to be free.
