In the 1960s, a plan was developed to build a new state-of-the-art airport on 39 acres in the Florida Everglades. The development of jet travel prompted the idea of accommodating the new, louder aircraft in the Everglades, outside Miami’s urban area.
The Everglades Jetport was designed to be a huge airport, five times the size of JFK Airport in New York. But opposition was mounted by those fearing damage to the environment of the glades, including Marjorie Stoneman Douglas.
The project was abandoned in the 70’s, but not before the long, extended runway was completed.
Today, the site is being repurposed by the state of Florida and Homeland Security to house and detain illegal aliens.
The harsh surrounding environment is home to both the Florida alligator and illegal pythons, making it a secure and isolated facility to deter escape attempts.
