The Florida Supreme Court heard oral arguments on whether Orlando State Attorney Aramis Ayala can elevate her own worldview values above the laws of Florida.
The recently elected prosecutor announced that no matter how heinous the circumstances, she would never seek the death penalty in capital murder cases.
Note that her position would unilaterally disqualify Florida law to the contrary.
Regardless of your position on the death penalty, Prosecutor Ayala is dead wrong in not fulfilling her oath of office to uphold ALL the laws of Florida.
Her actions demonstrate that she believes her values are superior and therefore trump Florida law.
Governor Scott was correct to reassign all pending death penalty cases from her office.
And I fully expect the Supreme Court to affirm the governor’s actions. I also suggest the people of Orange County elect another State Attorney.
