As the rescue crews meticulously remove the collapse debris from the Champaign condo in Surfside, Floridians in older high-rise condos are becoming more concerned by the minute.
As information about the condo inspection is emerging, it is triggering many more questions than answers.
No doubt, the location of the condo on the barrier island of thick sand, decades of pounding Atlantic surf just steps away, may have put it at additional risk.
But with Florida’s geology and her propensity for sinkholes, high-rise structural inspections must occur as they grow in age.
It’s up to a consensus of structural engineers to determine when and how often they should be completed, but done they must.
Far too many are retiring and moving into high-rises for this ever to happen again.
