Governor DeSantis is giving serious consideration to proposing the elimination of homesteaded property taxes. The Florida Legislature is also examining and studying the issue.
But what would that look like?
One proposal would be to raise the homestead exemption to $500,000 and $1 million for seniors. Also attached to the conversation is a proposal to cap property tax assessments at 15%.
Florida’s property taxes generate approximately $55 billion annually, accounting for 18% of the state's total revenue, 17% of municipal revenues, and 60% of public education funds.
The property tax funding source would need to be replaced with, potentially, an increased state sales tax, possibly up to 12%.
If enacted, a tsunami of new residents could be expected to flood the state, possibly facing a “new arrival” tax.
We'll hear more about the issue this fall.
