“Florida Python Challenge Is On

Bill Bunkley’s “This Is Something to Think About”

Air Date Friday 11 - Monday, 14, 2025

Snake sleuths have arrived in the Florida Everglades from around the country, ready to compete in an annual challenge.

Friday kicked off the official 10-day Burmese python challenge hunt, with a cash prize of $10,000 for the hunter who can remove the most behemoth snakes.

Burmese pythons are from Southeast Asia and have taken root primarily in the Florida Everglades, where irresponsible pet owners have unfortunately released them into the Florida wild when the snakes grew too big to handle. Reports are coming in that they are migrating northward,

Pythons can grow up to 16 to 20 feet long and weigh up to 200 pounds.

The females can lay up to 50 to 100 eggs at a time, thus increasing their numbers at an alarming rate.

Pythons are a significant threat to Florida's wildlife as the giant snakes have no natural predators.

They must be removed.
