As increasing numbers of adults seek to self-medicate the pain in their lives, real or imagined, or just the next illicit high, it’s the children who are getting hammered with the opioid epidemic.
The latest is 10-year-old Alton banks, a fifth-grade boy in Miami’s Overtown section who went swimming at the community pool, only to return home to start vomiting and later die at a local hospital with a lethal dose of fentanyl.
As shocking as that is, are you aware of the unacceptable number of babies at any given time in your local hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; who come into this life addicted to opioid dependence?
Those babies have to be detoxed at birth just like a heroin addict, usually with another drug: methadone.
Mothers who abuse oxycodone during pregnancy condemn their babies to a horrible beginning of life.
Yes, it’s past time to stop opioid abuse.
