Every 11 ½ minutes, someone in America commits suicide. A veteran takes their own life every 65 minutes. And suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-old Americans. 

Mental health stability is becoming more of a challenge each day as our tech-driven electronic lifestyle is serving up an overload for many people. The COVID lockdown and staggering inflation are only adding to the challenge for some to get through another day.

Thankfully our historically active suicide location of choice, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, has witnessed those numbers decrease with the new fencing and emergency call boxes.

And now, with a simple nationwide suicide crisis number to call for help, 988, I believe many more will get the help they need at that critical moment.

Bill Bunkley is a 16-year veteran Salem Radio talk show host based in west-central /Florida, airing weekdays 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Churches throughout Florida), among other churches and entities. He has served as legislative consultant to the Convention for the last 26 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee. By the Grace of his Lord Jesus, he is a cancer survivor diagnosed in 2018 with AML Leukemia, having successfully undergone a bone marrow transplant that same year.
