Finally, the Summer Olympic Games are opening in Tokyo. Or sort of.

Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic can add another casualty to the massive disruptions it has already inflicted upon the global population.

There will be no fans in the spectator seats. The competition comes a year late. Some great athletes who have trained a lifetime for these few moments of Olympic competition have had their dreams dashed because of a recent positive test to COVID.

Needless to say, there will be an asterisk next to the history book's recollection of these games.

It reminds me of the timeless Jessie Owens story marking the 1936 Summer Olympic Games held in Hitler’s Berlin.

I’ll be watching the games, but sadly, I will ponder if those allowed to compete are, in fact, the very best in the world.
