It didn’t take long for reality to set in.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pulled out all the stops to halt what would have been a certain revolt of the GOP faithful, had the simple motion to proceed for the repeal, replace or both of Obamacare come up short.
But after dodging the bullet with a tie breaking vote by Vice President Pence and a “parent like” scolding of fellow Senators by Senator McCain, a second, late evening vote tells the real tale of the challenge facing McConnell.
On a 2nd vote to overcome a parliamentary objection, Republicans not only failed to reach the required 60 votes to overcome the objection, but they also couldn't even get to 50: it failed 43 to57.
Do the math: 9 Republicans bolted, conservatives and moderates alike.
Houston, we have a problem.
Senate Republicans better figure out a solution fast because the nation’s patience with them is already razor thin.
