“Hurricane Debby Instructive to Florida Newcomers”

Hurricane Debby brushed along the entire Florida Gulf Coast before making landfall in the hurricane-friendly zone of the Big Bend area.

As Debby cranked up streams of very moist tropical weather, flash floods were the primary threat for West Central Florida residents.

For newcomers to Florida, Hurricane Debby was a very instructive exercise in hurricane preparation and developing a deep respect for these powerful cyclones.  

The most important rule for a hurricane or tropical storm is to HIDE from the winds and RUN from the water. Many people do not respect how fast water can rise from sudden, massive rains, tidal surges, or both.

I was born and raised in Tampa and have experienced many tropical cyclones. Native Floridians will tell you if you maintain a healthy respect for these storms and take all necessary precautions, you can weather them.

Bill Bunkley is an 18-year veteran Salem Media talk show host based in Tampa. The Bill Bunkley Show airs weekdays across central Florida from 3 to 6 pm.
