The two main influential newspaper consortiums in Florida will no longer compete against each other.

That’s because the Gannett newspaper group is merging with the GateHouse group.

The net effect of the merger means that 29 Florida newspapers will be under one roof.

Now I realize that the once dominant influence of local newspapers has drastically decreased in the electronic age. And that reporters of these 29 newspapers will still, in most cases, exercise their personal individual judgements when writing on local issues.

But when it comes to editorial content and opinion, Floridians will have an even lesser variety of independent views than they have today.

For conservatives, it reminds us of the dominant, one sided political worldviews of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Amazon.
