“Be Careful If You Wade or Swim”

Bay area beaches and waterways made national news on Fox Cable and other outlets, but it’s not the kind of report touting the positives.

A killer is lurking, and no, it is not Jaws.

But it is a potentially deadly “flesh-eating” bacterium called vibrio vulnificus. It likes to thrive in summertime in brackish, warm saltwater.

You should not enter the saltwater if you have any cuts or scrapes. That is the point of entry for the bacterium.

It’s serious as five have died; two in Hillsborough, one each in Pasco, Polk, and Sarasota counties. Twenty-six other cases have been reported this year. Last year seventeen people perished, while Florida officials logged seventy-four cases.

Hurricane Ian’s pollution drove the higher rates last year.

Take heed, better to be safe than get exposed to what could turn out to threaten your life.
