Hurricane Harvey was a vivid reminder to Floridians that a tropical cyclone is not to be taken as a party opportunity, but taken very serious. Before Harvey, it had been a decade since we witnessed a major hurricane. Disaster preparation officials had become concerned that mass apathy toward hurricanes had set in.
Most of you can attest that with Cat 5 Hurricane Irma setting her sights on Florida with 185 mph sustained winds, gusting to 225 mph, Floridians are NOT reacting apathetically. They’ve been out since Tuesday stocking up on supplies.
As Irma approaches Florida, you must remember that our entire peninsula will indeed experience Hurricane Irma’s impact. We just don’t know for sure what that impact will be in your neighborhood.
That’s why it is wise to execute your hurricane plan now and follow evacuation guidance without regard to the path Irma takes.
