“Two Tragedies: One Natural and One Senseless”

The first natural tragedy is Hurricane Ian which developed into a vast, nasty cyclone that will only rank under Hurricane Katrina in terms of destruction. Lee and Charlotte’s counties struggle to provide basic functionality for their citizens. Nothing can replace the loss of life, historic buildings turned into matchsticks, and rebuilding that will take a decade.

The second tragedy was the senseless death of one of Pinellas County’s finest: Sheriff Deputy Mike Hartwick. Mike was killed by an illegal alien driving a construction front-end loader who did not know to operate the equipment.

Because Ian’s search, rescue, and recovery have dominated our awareness, we must nonetheless not forget to mourn the tragic death of Deputy Hartwick.

Let us keep praying daily for all the lives impacted in both these tragedies.
