“Congress Must Act NOW to Save Social Security”

Bill Bunkley’s “This Is Something to Think About”

Air Date Friday, June 12, 2026

Social Security will face a shortage of funds by the 4th quarter of 2032, 6 years from now.

Social Security payroll taxes go into the Social Security trust fund. In years past, the fund had surpluses, so any surplus not needed to pay benefits was invested in US Treasury bonds. Today, we aren’t collecting enough payroll taxes to meet the increasing number of retiring “baby boomer” seniors, so the accumulated bonds are being cashed in to make up the difference. The last remaining bonds are quickly being liquidated.

Congress must increase the payroll tax rate, cut benefits, or do both. There is no provision for Congress to add money arbitrarily to the fund.

Congress must act to protect seniors, our kids, and grandkids.

The time is NOW, not tomorrow, to fix Social Security.
